About Reserva Nacional Altos de Lircay

Reserva Nacional Altos de Lircay is a nationally protected reserve located in the Andes of central Chile’s Maule Region. It encompasses a rugged mountainous terrain dominated by volcanic landscapes, including the impressive Nevado de Longaví peak, which towers at approximately 3,242 meters (10,637 feet). The reserve features native Chilean forests characterized by species like the endangered Araucaria araucana (Monkey Puzzle tree) alongside other southern beech varieties. Its ecosystems support diverse fauna such as pudú (world's smallest deer), pumas, Andean condors, and numerous bird species, making it an important sanctuary for Chilean biodiversity. Established in 1996, the reserve is a gateway to experiencing pristine mountain streams, waterfalls, and glacial cirques while offering varied hiking trails for all ability levels. Popular activities include day hiking, mountain climbing, nature photography, and bird watching. Key landmarks include the Ojos del Lircay waterfalls and the Lircay River basin, which provide refreshing natural attractions. The reserve’s remoteness and relatively low visitor numbers add to its appeal for adventurers seeking solitude and an immersive natural experience. Altos de Lircay also plays a critical role in environmental conservation efforts to protect vulnerable flora and fauna of central Chile’s Andes.
